Dedicated to the memory of my late and much-missed companion, Carmen Bernárdez, this album consists of two freely improvised pieces recorded live during a Mediterranean solo tour I took soon after her passing.
The first track, Impending, recalls the feelings we shared during the last months of her life when death was an impending certainty and life a privilege to be shared. My sense of dread was ineluctable and it emerges throughout this piece.
The second, Learning to be alone, begins with a prolonged silence stemming from the sense of emptiness that followed her loss and evokes my initial struggles to survive emotionally. The rattling sounds audible in the opening field recording of an Italian village band are of the huge iron chains bound to the feet of Holy Week penitents marching in front of the band and dragging the chains along the cobblestone streets.
Music has always been a healing force for me and this album, like my earlier Absent Friends, is particularly so. Feel free to download it at no cost, as I refuse to make money from her death. If you do decide to contribute, the money will go to her son.
