Of course we didn’t know it at the time, but today, there seems to be something disturbingly prescient about this music’s sense of alarm. We live in bellicose times and no one alive today remembers a time when that was not the case. Still, war is closer and closer to home and the shifting undercurrents that drive this work from 2013—one of my favorite recordings by one of my favorite trios—are, I believe, eloquent in that regard.

This music is pure improvisation. Nothing was said before we began recording and in retrospect it’s clear that the level of listening and dialogue could not possibly have been strengthened by mere chatter. My only “plan” was to start each piece with a clear proposition and so, none of the pieces wander around before finding themselves. It’s complete immersion from start to finish. Thanos came over from London with a suitcase full of surprises—gongs, his laptop, a radio and a synth—while Javier, who lives in Madrid, made his customary magic with an electric guitar, two very keen ears and his unfailing imagination. In such company, I most certainly didn’t lack stimulation, and I’m very happy to share the results with all of you today.
